Saathi is a Hindi movie released in 1991, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and written by Robin Bhatt. It stars Aditya Pancholi, Mohsin Khan, Varsha Usgaonkar and Soni Razdan in the lead roles, with Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal as the antagonists. The movie was a box office hit and is considered one of the best crime dramas of the 90s.
The movie revolves around the lives of two childhood friends, Suraj (Aditya Pancholi) and Amar (Mohsin Khan), who witness their father being brutally killed by a corrupt cop for stealing bread. They grow up to become small-time con artists and thieves, but have different ambitions. Suraj wants to become rich and powerful by joining the underworld, while Amar wants to leave the life of crime and settle down with his girlfriend Nisha (Varsha Usgaonkar).
Suraj gets involved with Pasha (Paresh Rawal), a notorious drug lord, and impresses him with his skills and courage. He soon becomes Pasha's right-hand man and takes over his empire after killing him. Suraj becomes a ruthless and arrogant gangster, who does not hesitate to kill anyone who comes in his way. He also develops a relationship with Tina (Soni Razdan), a prostitute who works for Pasha.
Amar tries to persuade Suraj to leave the underworld and join him in leading a normal life, but Suraj refuses. He thinks that Amar is jealous of his success and does not understand his dreams. Amar becomes disillusioned with Suraj and decides to part ways with him. He also joins the police force as an undercover agent to expose Suraj's illegal activities.
Suraj faces opposition from Samant (Avtar Gill), another gangster who wants to take over his territory. He also faces betrayal from his own men, who are unhappy with his arrogance and greed. Suraj becomes paranoid and isolated, trusting no one but Tina. He also becomes addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Amar infiltrates Suraj's gang and gathers evidence against him. He also tries to convince Tina to leave Suraj and help him in bringing him to justice. Tina is torn between her love for Suraj and her conscience. She eventually agrees to help Amar, but is killed by Suraj's men before she can testify against him.
Amar confronts Suraj and reveals his identity as a cop. He tells him that he still considers him as his friend and asks him to surrender peacefully. Suraj refuses and shoots at Amar, but misses. Amar shoots back and wounds Suraj fatally. Suraj dies in Amar's arms, asking for his forgiveness.
